  • Mould & Moisture Assessments & Remediation

Mould is an integral part of our daily lives. It is an inseparable component of indoor and outdoor environment. Many people may think that Mould is everywhere and that there is nothing we can do about that .. well, they are right. HOWEVER, Mold levels are what determined a healthy environment (indoors) as many factors in our daily lives can dramatically influence the levels of mould where we live and work.
Mould (Mold) is a micro-organism that exists in nature and can grow to form a multicellular filaments called Hyphae. Mould reproduces by releasing spores into the air that subsequently land onto surfaces and begin germinating and growing into mould cells, there mould cells then become fully grown and begin their sporulation period which then reintroduces the germination and repeats the cycle. This is in essence, where the problem exists in the indoor environment.

Mould, in its existence, requires a number of elements to survive: Source of moisture, source of food, Oxygen and ambient temperatures. These are also what a human being requires to live. Everything we need to survive, Mould also needs to survive. Therefore, one can begin to understand why it is difficult to eliminate Mould from the indoor environment.
One of the only factors or elements necessary for the survival of Mould that us humans can in fact control is Moisture. Mould, again like a human being, is Hydrophobic (does not like to drown), It requires moisture to survives, and we can control this event by not allowing any water intrusions and infiltrations into our buildings and maintaining dry building materials. In addition, the relative humidity in a building plays a major role in the control of moisture presence. Here is what we can do to ensure Mould is controlled in the indoor environment:

1) Relative Humidity Levels in the indoor air are maintained between 45 and 55 percent.
2) Leaks, infiltrations and water losses are controlled immediately and dealt with in a diligent manner. Most surfaces already have Mould spores on them, and it would take for some Mould species 24 hours to begin germination and can become fully grown within 48 hours and up to 12 days.
3) Maintain a healthy indoor airborne spore levels by maintaining the air filtration systems in your home (HVAC)
4) Engage in regular testing and evaluation of the indoor air quality. This is important to be aware of the status of your home's health. It is like a doctor's visit for your home.

Mold, whether black or not, is considered hazardous if it exceeds normal levels. We receive many calls from individuals with concerns about mold in their homes, offices or buildings. If you or any one you know have mold, do not disturb it. Attempting to clean mold improperly can lead to a much bigger problem in the future. Mold removal is a specialized process and is not to be treated otherwise. If cleaned improperly, spores will become airborne, and land on other clean surfaces and eventually begin their germination stage and now mold is an infestation. Call Martech for more information and to receive a free advice on mold, its impact and the process to remediate it. We will gladly provide you an estimate on removing unwanted mold from your residential or commercial property.
